Generally, weak points stay the same – poor knowledge of theory. None of the participants could list main contraindications against banya treatments. Esthetic element and appearance of the specialist are to be corrected as well” M. Kuchurkins (Director, SPA Guild): “There are still points to work on, however I was glad to see much more thoroughness in preparation for the contest. Only those win who gets prepared. Every year. There were participants with only 6-months experience – it was strange. Contest is not a testing platform. We might introduce limitation on the min level of working experience (1,5-2 years) the next year for Russian Spa Professional Awards. 1st prize winner – A. Dominin – gets opportunity to travel with the SPA Guild to Germany, to the Interbad fair 2010 and article with interview in the magazine “Banbas”. 2nd prize winner – S. National Guild of SPA Specialists thanks all the guests and participants and is waiting for all interested in its events spa-specialists the next year. “The best Banya specialist in SPA” contest will include competion in hammam the next year (“Treatments in Hammam”). Regional contest will take place in Sochi, Ekaterinburg, Volga region and Moscow. Pay attention to the advertisement, which starts in September 2009. The Russian ‘banya’ should not be mixed up with sauna. Steam in banya is humid (up to 80-100%). Steam in sauna is, on the contrary, dry. Visit to Banya in Russia is not only the method to cleanse the body, it has become part of the culture. Banya was known already in 5-th century. However, a true passion for banya was developed by Peter the Great, who loved hydro- and steam-treatments and visited Baden-Baden and Karlsbaden. Under the rule of Peter the Great no fees were charged for building banyas, but already then there existed strict regulation of material, zoning and location. The Guild of Russian SPA Experts pursued the aim to estimate the general level of banya specialists’ skills and knowledge and resolve an accumulated amount of questions and uncertainties regarding banya and sauna types differentiation, equipment, cosmetics and SPA cuisine for banya treatments, SPA rituals and SPA Etiquette in banya. The competition was held among 14 participants. The first place was shared between the specialists from Ekaterinburg and Yaroslavl. They will join the Guild in the fair Interbad 2008 in Stuttgart and conduct master-class there. The third place was won by the specialist from Moscow – he was presented a magnificent set of the Sultane de Saba cosmetics. Participants were estimated in four categories: 1. Filling in the Client’s Profile Card (max 5 min) – interviewing the client before the treatment and making notes of health state and peculiarities followed by personalized recommendations are obligatory elements of SPA; 2. Oral examination of the theoretical knowledge (questions asked were like: effects of different types of ‘venik’ (birch/oak/eucalyptus/pine); contraindications against visit to banya; what is the sequence of treatments in banya, etc.) 3. Preparation of the working place: accessorizes, ambient; 4. Show of treatment: pilling and venik session. Competition among the specialists was followed by the conference for the SPA Managers. It was devoted to the banya centre in SPAs: profit and public areas, equipment and training of the personnel and SPA cuisine relevant before visit to banya. Answering the most frequent question of the session, Marina Kuchurkina, Director of the Guild of Russian SPA Experts, promised that the “Banya Specialist Awards” would be held annually. Ms Kuchurkina comments further: “We have become the first in Russia and in the world to arrange banya awards in such a broad scope. Being the founder of the “Russian SPA Professional Awards”, I can say that we have succeeded. All the participants were very experienced and knowledgeable. They could show different interesting techniques using their own elaborations and proved to be theoretically prepared. However, I have seen a great lack of SPA Etiquette. Having in plan to equip your SPA salon with the banya complex, one should think of the integration of SPA elements through out all the departments. That is why we continue implementing the standards and educating our partners. The Guild welcomes all SPA professionals: therapists and managers, at the Academy of SPA Esthetics (ASE) – we are ready to share our knowledge and experience.” ********************************************* The Fur-tree broom ********************************************* ********************************************* The Oak broom ********************************************* The Bamboo broom ********************************************* The banya outside view ********************************************* Filling of cards-clients (testing) ********************************************* workplace registration Soaring.
